history

District museum Brigittenau in the Bertram-Schlössl

There was already a relevant local history museum on Wallensteinplatz in the 1930s. At the beginning of today's district museum there was a private collection of Brigittenau district inspector Heinrich Zwicker (1919–1991), which was shown with the support of district chairman Karl Michal in the 1950s in the building Wallensteinplatz 5–6 (later location of the Vindobona (cabaret) ). For decades, Zwicker collected materials on his tours as a police officer and also spread the history of the district in slide shows in restaurants.

View at night

From 1960 the collection was shown as the “Brigittenauer Heimatmuseum” in the premises of the Volkshochschule Brigittenau at Raffaelgasse 13 (in the block of the municipal district office); Zwicker worked as curator, and Anton Raschka took over the management of the museum, who had been very committed to founding the museum. The Brigittenau Museum Association was founded in 1966.

Heinrich Zwicker later withdrew from the project with his collection. A new collection therefore had to be built up for the museum. From April 1984 it was housed for ten years at Engerthstrasse 60-74 in what used to be health insurance rooms.

Location

In May 1994 the museum was opened in a building erected in 1889 in the style of historicism , later the villa of the factory owner Friedrich Bertram (the so-called "Bertram-Schlössl"). A memorial plaque in the building notes: The building of today's museum at Dresdner Straße 79 was originally built by the Friedrich and Anna Schmidt family in 1889 as a house on the foundations of a ferry house, which was later bought by the industrialist Bertram and used as an office and residential building. Before that there was the company Friedrich Weichmann's Witwe, II. Factory of signaling and lighting objects for railways at the address .

Engineer Karl August Czeija (1843–1909) founded a workshop for mechanics and telegraph construction in Vienna in 1880. In 1884 the electrical engineer Franz Nissl (1852–1942) took a stake in the company, which was now called "Telephon- und Telegraphenfabrik Czeija, Nissl & Co." The company played a major role in the development of the telephone network of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and built the first radio transmitters and radios in series from 1923. The company had been located on Dresdner Straße since 1907 and used the Bertram-Schlössl, among other things. From 1957 the company was called "Standard Telephon- und Telegraphen-AG Czeija, Nissl & Co. (STT)", which in 1970 became " ITT Austria GmbH" (since 1987 " Alcatel Austria AG", currently " Alcatel-Lucent ") and which moved out of the area in the late 1970s.

The villa, which has been vacant since 1981, and the factory area behind it at Dresdner Strasse 75–79, were purchased by the City of Vienna and restored over two years. The total area is around 600 m², 200 m² of which are in the attic. On the ground floor there is a lecture hall with a stage for 80 people, a meeting room and archive, offices and a cloakroom. The showrooms are on the first floor.

The District Museum is located near the stop Wien Traisengasse the Vienna S-Bahn and the station of the same name of the traffic passing through the Dresdner Straße tram 2 . Bus stops for bus lines 5A and 37A are also nearby.

Permanent collection

The museum documents the development of the district using exhibits, pictures, views, models, plans and many photos. Some subject areas are summarized in permanent exhibitions. There are also special exhibitions of various sizes, most of which are located in the lecture hall on the ground floor or in the anteroom on the first floor. Old views and plans relating to the district can be seen in the stairwell.

The other four rooms on the first floor, some of which are artistically decorated with stucco work, contain the basic exhibition on the industrial, social and political development of the district. The layout changes depending on the current focus of the exhibition. In the first room on the street side, exhibits on everyday history can currently be seen. One area shows the "Brigittenau before 1900". The arc stretches from the meadow to the industrial area to the residential area. Another room shows the technical development of the telephone and of Austria's earliest radio station, Radio Hekaphon . The company "Czeija, Nissl & Co", a leading high-tech company in its time, conducted radio test operations in 1923/1924 at what is now the WUK (cultural center) until Radio Verkehrs AG (RAVAG) began regular operations.

In the district history it goes u. a. about transportation. A model of a forerunner of the tram in Vienna , the Brigittenauer Pferdebahn, can be seen. A large model shows the north-west station near the museum in its time as a passenger station. A Robert Blum plaque commemorates the life of this 1848 revolutionary who was executed in Brigittenau. The exhibition "Brigittenau in the Resistance" commemorates the time of National Socialism and the victims of the Holocaust in the district. The Red Vienna and the Brigittenau, the once well-known Brigitta-Kirtag around the Brigittakapelle that entertainment establishments "Colosseum" and "Universe" , which Brigitta Hospital and the men's home in the Meldemannstraße 27, in which Adolf Hitler temporarily lived - his registration form is still available - are also part of the exhibition.

The permanent exhibition "Brigittenau - location for trade, commerce and industry" illustrates the economic development of Brigittenau with images and objects. The spectrum of the companies put together so far ranges from gingerbread models to stovepipes. The company headquarters are marked on a large district map. The following companies are currently on display:

The development of the Danube is shown in an adjacent building . It plays a very important role for Brigittenau, which is located on an island between the Danube Canal and the Danube River. Topics are the floods, the history of the Viennese Danube regulations , the first from 1870 and the second from 1972, which led to the construction of the New Danube . A central piece of the exhibition is the Danube Atlas from 1996, a unique technical and cultural-historical documentation with 280 maps and plans from Korneuburg to Fischamend . Furthermore, it is about shipping, the Danube fishing or electricity construction work.

In addition to the exhibitions, the museum offers further information. There is a library, negative image material, a slide archive, video documentation and a collection of magazines and documents. The museum also has materials on Eastern history from the time of Austria-Hungary . The district museum also publishes publications on the district history, such as museum papers, the brochure "Brigittenau - from the Au to the residential district", "Brigittenau - yesterday, today, tomorrow", "Brigittenau - museum and district history".
