Shipbuilding Research Institute

The Schiffbausechnische Versuchsanstalt Wien (SVA) or Vienna Model Basin Ltd is a non-university Austrian research institute in the 20th district of Brigittenau in Vienna . The establishment is run as a private limited company. It is one of the oldest research institutes in this field.

Ship models can be made from wax, wood or epoxy resins in the research institute. With these models different flow tests or maneuvering tests can be carried out. A wind tunnel is also available. The experimental pool, suitable for a wide variety of investigations, has a size of 10 × 180 m.

history

The research institute was founded in 1912 under the patronage of the Austrian Navy . After the collapse of Austria-Hungary , the institution had to establish international contacts in order to continue to exist. During the Second World War , development work was carried out on behalf of the Kriegsmarine , for example for concrete ship hulls. After the partial destruction during the war, operations were resumed in 1951 and now works for customers all over the world.
