The Simmering District Museum is a district and local museum in Vienna's 11th district Simmering . It is located in the building of the municipal district office for the 11th district at Enkplatz 2.

history

As early as 1883, nine years before Simmering was incorporated into Vienna, a local historian suggested that a collection be made about the history of the town. It was the local researcher Leopold Swatosch (1890–1950) who eventually founded the Alt-Simmeringer Club many years later . The Swatosch collections formed the basis for the Simmeringer Heimatmuseum.

The now listed ( list entry ) office building on Enkplatz was built in 1895 according to plans by the architect Adolf Langer. The first local history exhibition was held here in 1934, but this forerunner of today's museum was closed after Austria was annexed to the German Empire. Several exhibits were damaged during the Second World War. From 1954 to 1956 the exhibition was housed in a school. In 1965 the district museum got its permanent place in the municipal district office, where it is still located today.

General

The museum provides information about the history of Simmering, whereby the permanent exhibition is divided into three parts, which correspond to the former localities and now district parts Simmering , Kaiserebersdorf and Albern . Information on the origins and history of the district's sights such as the Neugebauten Castle and the cemetery of the nameless are also on display, as well as photos. Old prints and photos document the development of Simmering into an industrial location. The true-to-scale replica of the Simmering town center and its surroundings from around 1834 can be seen in a showcase.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, special exhibitions and guided tours are also held regularly. The district museum has been publishing the Simmeringer museum sheets since 1978 , of which over 78 issues have already appeared.

The museum director is the historian Petra Leban. She succeeded the local researcher and decades-long museum director Hans Havelka (1915-2006), after whom the Hans-Havelka-Weg in the Kaiserebersdorf district was named in 2008 . Another decade-long employee was the DÖW librarian and author Herbert Exenberger (1943–2009).
