District Museum Josefstadt

The District Museum Josefstadt is a district and local museum dedicated to the 8th Viennese district Josefstadt at the address Schmidgasse 18.

The district museum Josefstadt was founded on the initiative of Josef Berka in 1938, the first exhibits were collected in a depot in Strozzigasse, with a support association founded in 1943 providing helpful support. In 1945, however, a bomb hit destroyed the depot. In 1948 the museum was established in the office building on Schlesinger Platz, initially on a very narrow basis. 1954–1992 Ludwig Sackmauer was director of the museum; Ludwig-Sackmauer-Platz in the 8th district commemorates him . In 1962 the museum moved into the "Haus der Jugend" in Zeltgasse, before its current location at 18 Schmidgasse was found in 1981.

Today the district museum shows around 20,000 exhibits on a total area of 656 m² and thus documents the development of the bourgeois district that is close to the city today. Boards with different types of house and conscription numbers as well as street signs guide the visitor into the permanent exhibition. This shows, among other things, the historical plans by Nikolaus Meldemann from 1531, Van Alten-Allen 1683 and 1686, Anguissola-Marinoni 1706 and the bird's eye view plan by Josef Daniel von Huber from 1769/1774.

The museum's rarities include the original contract between Marchese Hippolito Malaspina in 1700 and the municipality of Vienna for the sale of his property, the later suburb of Josefstadt, and a black fan from Empress Elisabeth (1837–1898).

The museum also has a library with around 7,000 volumes and the main focus on the history of Josefstadt. The majority of the holdings come from donations to the museum. Among other things, 4,500 volumes from the collection of the Viennese historian Richard Perger, who died in 2010 . Two smaller special collections on the Josefstadt writers Friedrich Hebbel and Stefan Zweig are also part of the museum library.

Architects who lived or worked in Josefstadt were Lucas von Hildebrandt , Friedrich von Schmidt , Robert Oerley and Max Fleischer . Memorabilia are also dedicated to them in the museum. Josefstadt is also recognized as the "Mecca of coffee houses". ( Café Eiles , Café Hummel etc.).

There were many Vienna mayors who lived in the 8th district, including Cajetan Felder , Theodor Körner and Helmut Zilk . They are also remembered here, as are the local patrons and donors. The museum has a specialist library of around 10,000 volumes.
