In 1989 he decided to flee the GDR. He attempted to escape on January 13th. His plan was to take the S-Bahn from Pankow to Schönhauser Allee and to get off the train at a point near Bornholmer Strasse during the journey. At this point there were only 20 meters between the S-Bahn tracks and West Berlin. That is why the border was secured here with a 5.40 meter high wall, which Ingolf Diederichs wanted to overcome with a folding ladder he had built himself. At around 6.30 p.m. Ingolf Diederichs jumped out of the S-Bahn, but got stuck on the vehicle and was dragged along. He died immediately of severe head injuries. His body was discovered a little later by the driver of a S-Bahn traveling in the opposite direction in the track area 10 meters north of the Bösebrücke .

After the fall of the Wall , the Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into the circumstances of death in 1994, which the Ministry for State Security disguised as an accident. The investigations ended with the result that third party fault could be excluded.
