Volker Frommann (born April 23, 1944 in Unterpörlitz , † March 5, 1973 in Berlin ) was a victim of the Berlin Wall . He tried to overcome the border systems of the Berlin Wall between the districts of Pankow and Wedding and died as a result of jumping out of a moving S-Bahn near the sector border .

Life

After finishing school he began an apprenticeship as a locksmith at VEB Glasmaschinenbau Ilmenau . Already at this time he was critical of the social development in the GDR and was involved in the young community . In April 1960 his hometown was declared a fully cooperative village by the authorities of the GDR , which corresponded to the compulsory expropriation of the farmers. During the scheduled festival, Volker Frommann and a friend caused a short circuit by throwing an iron chain over a power line supplying the place. After months of intensive investigations by the Ministry for State Security (MfS) , the two young people were arrested. Because of this offense, the District Court of Suhl sentenced her to three years in prison on November 17, 1960 for “acts of violence that endanger the state”. Since they were also found to have stolen four cans of pineapple from the House of Culture, they were sentenced to six months' imprisonment for “theft of public property”. He spent his imprisonment in the Stasi remand prison in Suhl , in the prisons Untermaßfeld and Halle (Saale) as well as in the Torgau youth center , which later became the Torgau youth work center . Because of good conduct, he was paroled in August 1962. In the same year he attempted to escape via Czechoslovakia , in which he was arrested again. He was imprisoned in Untermaßfeld prison until 1964. He then worked as a locksmith and in a glass painting. Because of the psychological consequences of multiple incarcerations, he went to psychotherapeutic treatment and learned autogenic training . At the end of the 1960s he married a doctor and lived in seclusion in his hometown.

On March 1, 1973, at about 0.45 a.m. in Berlin, he tried to overcome the border fortifications of the Berlin Wall. He suffered serious injuries when jumping out of a moving S-Bahn between the Pankow and Schönhauser Allee stations . The local S-Bahn line ran directly through the border area in the area of the Bösebrücke . He was no longer available when he was found by a patrol of the transport police next to the tracks and 50 meters from the actual border area. After being transported to the Friedrichshain hospital , he succumbed to his injuries there on March 5, 1973.

A nurse from this hospital, who had previously attended the nursing school with his wife, informed the parents of Volker Frommann of his death at the Berlin Wall. The GDR authorities withheld the exact circumstances of death from the family. Volker Frommann was buried in the cemetery in Unterpörlitz.

At the Memorial Window of Remembrance of the Berlin Wall Memorial , he is remembered today with a picture in one of the windows.
