Hofbauer is an Austrian chocolate brand from the Hofbauer company , which today belongs to the Swiss company Lindt & Sprüngli .

history

The confectionery company was founded in Vienna - Margareten in 1882 by Carl Hofbauer , born in 1855 from the Weinviertel . His wife Juliane Reischl also worked in the business. Soon afterwards, other branches were also opened.

The headquarters were relocated. The company suffered a setback during the First World War , when operations could only continue poorly due to a lack of raw materials.

After the war in 1918, his son Ludwig took over the company and, with his wife Engelberta, switched production to en-gros production. It was at this time that the successful chocolate maroni and toffee were created .

During the Second World War , Engelberta Hofbauer led the company, which had around 150 employees at the beginning of the war. After the war, the company had to stop production until 1948. Even if the demand for chocolate was great, the raw materials were hardly available in occupied post-war Austria . From 1950 the situation improved noticeably and mainly specialist shops and pastry shops were supplied.

In the 1960s, exports were also successful, mainly to Germany and Italy, but also to England and the USA. In 1972 Hofbauer also took over the confectionery competitor Küfferle with his famous cat's tongues . While Hofbauer continued to rely on the specialist trade with his own production, he supplied the wholesale markets and grocery chains via Küfferle.

At the beginning of the 1990s, a new plant was built in Gloggnitz in southern Lower Austria and opened in 1993. In 1994 Hofbauer was taken over by the Swiss manufacturer Lindt & Sprüngli. The pralines will continue to be sold under the Hofbauer and Küfferle brands.
