Vindobona - "The cabaret for locals and Zuagraste" (2010)

The Vindobona is a traditional cabaret and cabaret stage in the 20th district of Brigittenau , Wallensteinplatz 6.

history

Nadja Maleh , Viktor Gernot and Michael Niavarani , the winners of the Austrian Cabaret Prize 2010, on the Vindobona stage

Shortly after the house on Wallensteinplatz was completed in 1919, the building's inner courtyard was dug up and a ballroom was built. But as early as 1921, after a spectacular renovation, it became the Vindobona cinema , a suburban cinema , of which there were innumerable types at the time, ten in Brigittenau alone. After a further renovation in the 1930s, the cinema had to close its doors forever in 1976 when the cinema was "dying out".

In 1978 Erwin Piplits chose the house as a venue for his Serapionstheater , which ten years later moved to the Odeon Theater in Taborstrasse . In October 1988 Fritz Aumayr opened the cabaret “Vindobona” here. In 1999, the cultural manager Wolfgang Gratzl took over the management of the venue. The Austrian Cabaret Prize , which was awarded annually as part of the Austrian Cabaret Festival, was created under his direction . In addition, the Vindobona became Austria's largest children's theater stage, young artists could use the space for exhibitions, after the Wiener Festwochen the Wiener Kabarettfestwochen were held in the Vienna Volkstheater , and every year the Vindobona was available to Amnesty International Austria free of charge for charity events for one week . With 350 performances, over 70,000 spectators per year and an operation without grants or subsidies, the Vindobona represented a model operation in the field of culture and was one of the most important contact points for the German-speaking cabaret scene until its closure.

In 2003, the Viennese City Councilor for Culture made the inevitable complete renovation of the stage a top priority, which enabled extensive renovation and conversion work to begin in 2005. In autumn 2005 the "Lustspielhaus" served as an alternative accommodation. In March 2006 the main hall of the Vindobona was reopened, the construction work in the new, small hall and in the catering area was delayed. After the last performance on December 22nd, 2006, the game was stopped because the renovation work that had not been completed turned out to be no longer financially viable and the negotiations between the operator and the City of Vienna on building subsidies did not come to a mutually acceptable result.

In August 2008 it was announced that the Cabaret Simpl Betriebsgesellschaft mbH Alfred Schmidleitners is taking over the Vindobona and that the renovation work, which is still inactive, is to be completed. The reopening of the Vindobona took place on October 10, 2009 with the piece "Jägerstraße". Albert Schmidleitner GmbH, renamed after the sale of the Simpl to Michael Niavarani in June 2019, filed for bankruptcy in January 2020 .
