The Vienna Chamber Opera is an opera house on the northern edge of Vienna's inner city , which is played in the stagione system. The Chamber Opera has been sponsored by the Theater an der Wien since autumn 2012 .

history

The chamber opera was founded in 1953 by the Hungarian conductor Hans Gabor . At first the institution did not have a permanent home and played in the Mozart Hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Schönbrunn Palace Theater . Since 1961 , she has received an annual subsidy from the Ministry of Education and the City of Vienna , so that she could move into the former ballroom of the Hotel Post am Fleischmarkt as a permanent venue. The program included opera buffa , operetta and singspiele . World premieres and chamber arrangements of larger repertoire works such as Carmen or La Bohème were also occasionally in the program. George Tabori's production of Ruggero Leoncavallos Bajazzo in 1986 had a bigger impact , the production was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen and recorded on television.

In the 1999/2000 season Isabella Gabor and Holger Bleck took over the management of the Vienna Chamber Opera. The promotion of young singers with the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition and the opera productions in Haus am Fleischmarkt continued to be the main pillars of the Vienna Chamber Opera. The Gabor & Bleck directorate considered its artistic task to be to find works that are neither part of the repertoire of the large houses nor that have been produced by independent groups. This resulted in a program of rarities from the fields of baroque opera, opera buffa, chamber musicals and contemporary music theater.

In autumn 2012 the Theater an der Wien took over the chamber opera. An ensemble of seven young singers, which changes every 2 years, was hired especially for this purpose in order to revitalize the venue on the meat market. Since the 2012/2013 season, the chamber opera's repertoire has included five opera productions, seven portrait concerts (one for each of the ensemble members) as well as other concerts, opening matinees, etc. From 2012 to 2015, Sebastian F. Schwarz was artistic director and, together with Renate Futterknecht, managing director of the chamber opera.

Singing competition

From 1982 to 2012 the Chamber Opera organized the International Belvedere Singing Competition . At that time, the Belvedere Singing Competition was one of the world's most renowned and largest singing competitions, with preselections in around 50 cities on all continents. In 2013, the sponsorship was taken over by its own association and the competition now takes place separately from the Vienna Chamber Opera at different locations every year. The last venue in 2014 was Düsseldorf.
