Leopoldstadt Theater

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Leopoldstädter Theater was a well-known theater in Leopoldstadt , a suburb of Vienna at the time . The theater, which was run down at the time, was acquired in 1838 by the then Viennese "theater croesus" Carl Carl and was then known as the "Carl Theater". a. Johann Nepomuk Nestroy performed, who later also directed the theater.

The Leopoldstädter Theater, the first of Vienna's suburban theaters, was designed by Jean-Baptiste Brequin , the imperial director of hydraulic engineering, and the master builder Peter Mollner , and opened in 1781 by Karl von Marinelli .

The program consisted mainly of local and magical antics, parodies and singing plays from the old Viennese folk theater .

Important actors in this house from this time were Anton Hasenhut , Therese Krones , Johann Nepomuk Nestroy , Johann Joseph La Roche , Ferdinand Raimund and Ignaz Schuster . The comedian trio Karl Blasel , Wilhelm Knaack and Josef Matras , as well as Andreas Scutta , also celebrated great success .

Karl Friedrich Hensler was a successful playwright from this period . After the death of director Marinelli, he ran the theater as director until 1816. Other then successful playwrights such as Franz Xaver Gewey , Josef Alois Gleich , Friedrich Kaiser , Ferdinand Kringsteiner , Carl Meisl , Johann Nepomuk Nestroy , Joachim Perinet , Ferdinand Raimund celebrated great successes there. The house composer Wenzel Müller was almost part of the inventory .

From 1821 Ferdinand Raimund also directed the theater there, and from 1828 to 1830 he was director of the theater.

After lengthy financial difficulties, the Leopoldstadt Theater was sold to the theater director Carl Carl in 1838 . He had the house rebuilt by the architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll . In 1847 it was reopened under the name Carltheater . The Carltheater was so badly damaged in World War II that the ruins were torn down in 1951.

The Komödiengasse and Marinelligasse in Leopoldstadt are reminiscent of the theater .
