Nestroyhof by Oskar Marmorek

The Nestroyhof is an Art Nouveau building on Nestroyplatz in Vienna's 2nd district, Leopoldstadt, built in 1898 based on a design by Oskar Marmorek .

history

After Oskar Marmorek married the painter Nelly Schwarz in 1897, he built the Nestroyhof in 1898 for his father-in-law Julius Schwarz. The Nestroyhof initially served as a center for Jewish culture (Marmorek was a companion of Theodor Herzl ) and was used multifunctionally for theater, film screenings, offices, shops and apartments.

Nestroy Halls

In the Nestroy-Säle establishment , which was located in the lower part of the house, opened in 1899 and was a well-known Viennese entertainment establishment, there was an inn, a beer hall, a restaurant in the form of a winter garden and in the basement the Sphinx dance bar and a theater hall, the Intimate theater, where, among others, the theater group Trianon by Karl Kraus appeared, which on May 29, 1905, played Frank Wedekind's Die Büchse der Pandora with Tilly Newes , Adele Sandrock , Albert Heine , Anton Edthofer , Egon Friedell and Wedekind himself in the role of Jack the Ripper premiered in Austria. From 1904 to 1918 Emil Richter-Roland and Oscar Friedmann directed the Intime Theater as a small literary stage, which staged Austrian premieres of Maxim Gorki , August Strindberg and Maurice Maeterlinck , and later also French comedies under Emil's wife Josefine. After the bankruptcy of the Nestroy- Säle establishment , the modern Folies Comiques variety theater was opened. In addition to Theater Reklame , which was founded later, a movie theater was set up in the building's side wing and the dance bar in the basement, both of which existed until 1942.

Jewish artist games

From 1927 to 1938 the Nestroyhof was the home of the Jewish Artists' Games . Under the direction of Jakob Goldfließ, the Jewish Artists' Games presented evenings that deal with Zionism , Jewish identity and anti-Semitism . The program was varied, Yiddish revues with a Zionist tendency by Abisch Meisels as well as demanding dramas such as Arnold Zweig's drama about an anti-Semitic ritual murder legend "Die Sendung Semaels" with Leo Reuss in a German-Yiddish production were performed. In addition to local actors such as Mina Deutsch, Paula Dreiblatt, Dolly Nachbar and Benzion Sigall, guests from “East and West” appeared in the artist's plays; the guest performances by the Siegler-Pastor troupe from Romania with their star Sevilla Pastor were particularly popular. Paul Baratoff offered serious theatrical art in August Strindberg's “Der Vater”, and actors like Hans Moser also appeared there.

There were guest performances by famous Yiddish theater companies from Budapest , Warsaw , Wilna ( Wilnaer Troupe ) and Galicia as well as the Moscow Jewish State Theater under the direction of Alexander Granowski (1928), Maurice Schwartz and his Yiddish Art Theater from the USA (1924 and 1936) and performances by the famous Habima ensemble that wanted to perform in Vienna on the occasion of a European tour in February 1938. As before in 1926 and 1928, the Hebrew ensemble wanted to play at a large Viennese theater, but was turned away everywhere and had to make do with the small Jewish artist plays in the Nestroyhof. After a few performances, Habima broke off her guest performance prematurely and left Vienna at the end of February 1938.

In 1938 the Nestroyhof was taken over by the National Socialists from the owner at the time, Anna Stein, "Aryanized" in 1940 and given to the industrialist family Polsterer .

post war period

After the Second World War , the Nestroy cinema was operated again in the building , which was later converted into a coffee house. A restitution process in 1952 led to a controversial equalizer. The heirs waived the provision, the Polsterer family paid a contribution of 3,500 schillings. The house, which had been damaged in the war, was restored in 1956/57 with the help of state subsidies. The "Sphinx" bar in the basement, originally built in the Egyptian style, has not been revitalized to this day.

The Bartosch joinery was housed in the ground floor ballroom until the 1960s. After that, the premises were used by a supermarket . From 1997 the premises were deserted and not accessible to visitors.

Nestroyhof Hamakom Theater

In 2003, a false ceiling was removed and an intact, central auditorium and a theater balcony level for more than 250 people were discovered. Between 2004 and 2007, cultural events took place at irregular intervals. This cultural use could be made possible with a precarious right , which one of the co-owners had obtained against the interests of the majority owner. In 2007, the piece was The Abandoned Dido by Markus Kupferblum performed here and received the Nestroy Theater Prize as best off-production of the year. In 2007, the precarious law was given up due to increasing financial difficulties, a commercial use as business space was again in the room.

In May 2008, a new initiative started with the involvement of the minority owner, which aimed at an unlimited cultural use of the theater rooms. The group Theater Nestroyhof Hamakom (ha Makom = Hebrew for "the place") under the direction of Frederic Lion and Amira Bibawy created a concept for the use of the house and obtained municipal cultural funding from 2009 to 2013. The restoration of the theater also counted to the goal of the group, for which the city of Vienna granted a building cost subsidy. The architect Gregor Eichinger directed the renovation work inside the theater.

After the renovation work on the building was completed in autumn 2009, the Nestroyhof Hamakom theater went from provisional to regular theater operations. Exhibitions and readings are also held there.

Nestroyhof art space

In June 2016, in addition to the HaMakom theater, the Nestroyhof art space was opened with the Real Fictional exhibition, in which works by object artist Julie Hayward and painter Thomas Reinhold were presented.
