Albert Heine
Albert Heine (born November 16, 1867 in Braunschweig , † April 13, 1949 in Westerland , Sylt ) was a German actor and director and director of the Vienna Burgtheater from 1918 to 1921 .
Life
The son of a Braunschweig master locksmith passed the Abitur at the Martino-Katharineum Braunschweig and completed a subsequent business apprenticeship. In 1891 he volunteered at the Royal Theater in Berlin. Between 1900 and 1905 he was occasionally engaged at the Burgtheater, from 1910 onwards. From 1910 he worked there as a director.
After the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy in 1918, he took over the management of the house until 1921, which was now only called the Burgtheater after the republic took over the kk Hoftheater. He also worked as an actor and director in several Austrian silent film productions.
In this politically unsettled post-war period, marked by economic hardship, Albert Heine tried to maintain artistic continuity. It was he who engaged Raoul Aslan to the Burgtheater and who performed contemporary dramas by Anton Wildgans (premiere of Dies irae ), Carl Sternheim and Henrik Ibsen . He was also a pioneer for expressionist stage design .
In 1921 he resigned as director in order to be able to work again as an actor and director. However, the differences with the ensemble regarding an engagement by Max Reinhardt were one of the reasons for his resignation . He only wanted to give a guest appearance at the Burgtheater if he could have brought some of his Berlin actors with him. However, for fear of losing their jobs in these economically difficult times, this demand met with vehement resistance from the Viennese ensemble.
In 1936 he became an honorary member of the Burgtheater. From 1914 to 1937 he taught at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts (today University of Music and Performing Arts ) in Vienna.
