Karin Bergmann (* 1953 in Recklinghausen ) is a German theater specialist . From 2014 to 2019 she was director of the Vienna Burgtheater .

Life

She began her theater career in 1979 as an assistant director at the Schauspielhaus Bochum under artistic director Claus Peymann and in 1983 became press officer at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg with the artistic directors Niels-Peter Rudolph and Peter Zadek . Three years later she came to Vienna with Claus Peymann as press spokeswoman for the Burgtheater, where she has lived and worked ever since. In 1993, Artistic Director Rudi Klausnitzer brought her to the United Bühnen Wien as press spokeswoman and member of the board , until in 1996 she moved to Klaus Bachler in the same functions at the Volksoper Vienna .

In 1999 Bachler was entrusted with the management of the Burgtheater and Bergmann was its deputy director. In the last year of his ten-year management, Bergmann did not head the Burgtheater nominally until the transition to Matthias Hartmann , but de facto alone, since Bachler had already taken over the Bavarian State Opera , and remained until the 2009/2010 season. Bergmann recently held the 125th Anniversary Congress of the Vienna Burgtheater "What theater do we dream of?" organized in October 2013.

On March 19, 2014, Karin Bergmann was appointed interim artistic director of the Burgtheater for the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons by Minister of Culture Josef Ostermayer . She succeeded the Burgtheater director Matthias Hartmann , who was dismissed on March 11, 2014, and was the first Burgtheater director. On October 14, 2014 Ostermayer announced Bergmann's appointment as artistic director until 2019. Bergmann left the Burgtheater at the end of the 2018/2019 season.

Bergmann is married to the architect and designer Luigi Blau .
