Paul Schlenther (born August 20, 1854 in Insterburg , East Prussia , † April 30, 1916 in Berlin ) was a German theater critic, writer and theater director.

Life

The son of the pharmacist Emil Schlenther and his wife Leonide geb. Freiin v. Buttlar attended the grammar school in Insterburg and the Kneiphöfische grammar school in Königsberg . He studied German and history under Wilhelm Scherer and Erich Schmidt at the Kaiser Wilhelms University of Strasbourg . He wrote his doctoral thesis on Luise Adelgunde Victorie Gottsched with Adelbert von Keller . In 1880 he was supported by the University of Tübingen to Dr. phil. PhD. In 1881/82 he dealt primarily with literary articles and theater reviews. In 1883/84 he was editor of the Deutsche Literatur-Zeitung . He became known in 1883 with his jubilee review Botho von Hülsen and his people for the general directorship of the royal theaters. He was one of the pioneers of naturalism and from 1886 to 1898 initially a colleague and then successor to Theodor Fontane as a theater critic for the Vossische Zeitung . He was particularly committed to the pieces by Henrik Ibsen and Gerhart Hauptmann . With Otto Brahm , Maximilian Harden and others he founded the Free Stage in 1889 . From 1898 to 1910 Schlenther was director of the Vienna Burgtheater . Here in 1905 he staged a Don Karlos by Friedrich Schiller, which was spread over two evenings . After that he was theater critic for the Berliner Tageblatt until his death from cancer . Paul Schlenther was married to the actress Paula Conrad (1860–1938). His grave is in the urn cemetery on Richtstrasse .

In 1955, Schlenthergasse in Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after him.
