Curt Bernd Sucher (also C. Bernd Sucher ; born July 6, 1949 in Bitterfeld ) is a German theater critic , author and university professor. He was the editor in charge of the spoken theater and author at the Süddeutsche Zeitung . Sucher directs the postgraduate course "Theater, TV and Film Criticism" at the University of Television and Film Munich in cooperation with the August Everding Theater Academy .

Life

Curt Bernd Sucher was born in Bitterfeld and grew up in Hamburg . In 1969 he passed the Abitur at the Albrecht-Thaer-Gymnasium . After graduating from high school, he studied German , theater studies and Romance studies at the University of Hamburg , the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and the University of Munich and received his doctorate with a thesis on Martin Luther and the Jews : Martin Luther's position on the Jews. From 1978 to 1980 he was the chief cultural editor of the Schwäbische Zeitung in Ulm and then switched to the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Munich , where he was the editor responsible for spoken theater and the first theater critic until 1999. Until 2005 he wrote as the exclusive author for this newspaper and then worked as a freelance writer and critic, including for Die Zeit and Theater heute .

During his time as an editor, Sucher taught since 1989 at the German School of Journalism in Munich and the University of Munich at the Institute for Theater Studies. In 1992 and 1993 he was a lecturer at the University of Eichstätt (Chair for Didactics of German Language and Literature), in 1995 and 1996 at the Moscow Gitis Institute (theater criticism). Since 1996 he has been a professor at the University of Television and Film, and since the 1997/1998 winter semester has headed the postgraduate course in “Theater, Film, and TV Criticism” in cooperation with the August Everding Theater Academy.

He is a member of juries, including a. at: Berliner Theatertreffen , Else Lasker Schüler Dramatist Prize , Körber Studio Junge Regie, Heidelberger Stückemarkt ; and juror and festival organizer at radikal jung at the Volkstheater Munich .

C. Bernd Sucher has been a member of the PEN Club since 1999 ; in 2004 he became a member of the Rotary Club Munich- Hofgarten and in 2014 the Munich Men's Club . He has been a member of the German Academy of Performing Arts since 2018 .

With his literary lecture series Suchers Passenschaften , he has appeared together with theater artists in Munich and other European cities since 1999, the series was also shown on the television program of the Bavarian Radio .

Sucher lives with his husband in Munich and in Chiemgau .

Lecture series "Seeker's Passions"

In the 1999/2000 season Sucher began his literary lecture series Sucher's Passions , with which he has since been guest in Munich, Vienna , Zurich , Hamburg , Weimar , Berlin , Frankfurt , Essen and Paris (in French ), accompanied by actors. A book or theater author is always at the center of his readings . Sucher presents the audience with his personal perspective on the life and work of the author.

Since 1999, protagonists of the ensembles of the Bavarian State Theater , the Münchner Kammerspiele , the Vienna Burgtheater , the Zürcher Schauspielhaus have been involved, supplemented by Senta Berger , Ulrich Matthes , Martina Gedeck , Monika Bleibtreu , Otto Sander , Thomas Thieme , Sophie Rois , Dörte Lyssewski , Burghart Klaußner , Angela Winkler , Charles Brauer , Udo Samel with.
