The Russian Academy of Theater Arts ( Russian Российская академия театрального искусства ) is one of the oldest and most traditional drama schools in Russia. It was founded on October 22, 1878. Until 1991 it was under the name State Institute of Theater Arts ( Russian Государственный институт театрального искусства ) in Cyrillic letters short ГИТИС (ie GITIS known). This abbreviation is still in use today. From 1934 to 1991 the addition имени А.В.Луначарского was used in honor of Anatoly Lunacharsky , who died in 1933 .

GITIS has an excellent reputation both in Russia and internationally. She has set herself the goal of teaching her students the classical, traditional art of acting. The creative principles of the Russian Academy of Theater Arts include the harmonious combination of pedagogical traditions and innovations in all subject areas. The entrance exams and the training of actors and actresses are tough and demanding. Around 1,500 students study at the academy every year.

In Aarhus , Denmark , the academy has a Scandinavian branch, the GITIS Scandinavia Theater Academy .
