Jurij Alschitz ( Russian Юрий Леонович Альшиц Juri Leonowitsch Alschiz , transl. Jurij Leonovič Al'šic ; born August 9, 1947 in Odessa , Soviet Union ) is a Russian theater director. He has lived and worked in Berlin since 1992 .

Alschitz, Dr. phil. is a theater director, drama teacher, scientist in applied theater research and has developed a comprehensive artistic, methodical and philosophical approach to the art of acting in the 21st century with “Training as a Method”. He is Artistic Director of the European Association for Theater Culture and the World Theater Training Institute AKT-ZENT, the research center for training methods of the International Theater Institute .

Life

Alschitz, son of the actress Raissa Stawizkaja and the set designer Leon Alschiz, grew up in a traditional theater family.

First experiences in theater

After studying directing at the Moscow State University for Culture and Art from 1969 to 1973 with JN Malkowskij, a direct student of KS Stanislawskij and numerous productions at state theaters in Moscow , Kiev , Odessa , Riga , etc. a. Alschitz decided to do a second degree with M. Budkewitsch, Oleg Koudriachov and A. Vasiljev at GITIS - the Russian Academy of Theater Arts, where he also held a teaching position from 1989 to 1992, and in 1987 he joined the founding team of the Theater School of Dramatic Art - Anatolij Vasiljev belonged to. Teachers in Europe

With the move to Berlin in 1992, Alschitz finally shifted his work focus to drama pedagogy, above all to the further training of professional actors and directors as well as to the development of a communicable pedagogy and methodology for drama teachers. This also marked the beginning of the phase of intensive practical research and teaching at theater schools and academies such as the State University for Music and Performing Arts (Stuttgart), Folkwang University (Essen), the University of the Arts (Berlin), the Dramatiska Institutet (Stockholm), Malmö Theater Academy, Civica Accademia D'Arte Dramatica Nico Pepe (Udine), Film Institute (Rome), Pontedera Teatro, Scuola D'Arte Drammatica Paolo Grassi (Milan).

Foundation of the European Association for Theater Culture

In order to be able to establish long-term and concentrated acting pedagogical work in Europe, Alschitz founded SCUT (Skandinaviskt Centrum for Utforskning av Teater) in Stockholm in 1994 . This was followed in 1995 by AKT-ZENT Internationales Theaterzentrum Berlin and PROTEI Progetti Teatrali Internazionali in Rome. In 2000 these independently operating centers merged with the newly established center KOINE Langages Transartistiques Paris under his artistic direction to form the European Association for Theater Culture (EATC).

Since 1996 Jurij Alschitz has initiated extensive projects on specific topics, which were carried out together with the centers of the European Association for Theater Culture, leading academies and national centers of the International Theater Institute. In the process, specialist books for acting practice such as “The vertical of the role. A method for the independent development of a role ”and“ 40 questions for a role ”, with which he introduced maeutics as a method of role analysis. “The Art of Dialogue” provided the path to the “Dialogue of the Sphere” for the first time.

With “School after Theater”, a cooperation with the Russian Academy for Theater Arts GITIS, Alschitz has introduced the principle of professional extra-occupational training for directing and acting in Western Europe. Between 1995 and 2009 this 3-year advanced training was carried out in 9 international classes with modules in Estonia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, Sweden and Russia.

With the "International Directors 'and Trainers' Colloquium" he introduced courses for acting teachers, which he presented in 2001 at the Theater Olympics in Moscow as an innovative form of professional training for drama pedagogy.

At the first World Conference of Rectors of Higher Education Theater Institutions (1999), Alschitz received international attention for this topic by completely re-evaluating the profession of acting educator and making "Training of Trainers" in the field of acting education the top priority for the development of theater proposed.

Following this thesis, Alschitz launched the first international festival for theater training methods METHODIKA in 1999, which then took place every two years on a new topic in Italy, Sweden, Russia and Cyprus and became a think tank for new, unexplored approaches in theater training.

In 2012-14, Alschitz took up the topic of “Training the Trainers” again and implemented it in practice at the Centro Universitario de Teatro of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) with the first international master’s degree in acting “Teaching Professional Theater Practice”. His manifesto “The New Face of the Acting Teacher” suggests alternative forms and fundamental changes in teaching.

Since the founding of the EATC , Jurij Alschitz has trained actors and directors in various forms of seminars and laboratories and has built up his so-called “Team of Teachers”, who teach his methodology with many voices worldwide.

Research center of the International Theater Institute ITI

Due to its research activities, the international theater center AKT-ZENT became the Research Center of the Theater Education & Training Committee / ITI in 2006 . In 2011, the General Assembly of the International Theater Institute named AKT-ZENT under the artistic direction of Jurij Alschitz as the ITI Research Center for Theater Training Methods.

Alschitz has been the artistic and scientific director of the World Theater Training Institute AKT-ZENT / ITI since 2017 . The institute primarily pursues the ITI project "The World Theater Training Library", a long-term study and artistic-methodological development work on training methods worldwide. For this purpose, Alschitz has traveled to almost all continents since 2010, conducted interviews, attended rehearsals, gave lectures and seminars in order to let the impressions and ideas grow into new training exercises in international laboratories and to combine them with the latest achievements from science and technology, such as the fractal To combine geometry , quantum physics , wave theory and phenomena of resonance . From this he developed new teaching formats and the term quantum education. Alschitz represents the idea of ​​a holistic theater in which the artist sees himself as part of the theater cosmos and in this way achieves individual freedom and independence. Hybrid Education on the institute's own online learning platform is part of the new teaching concept .

Alschitz is a sought-after expert at international festivals and conferences. His specialist books are published in numerous languages ​​worldwide.
