Adlerflug (born March 3, 2004 ) is an English thoroughbred horse that was bred out of Aiyana by In The Wings at the Schlenderhan Stud .

ancestry

Adlerflug's dam line has been running entirely within one stud, the Schlenderhan stud, for over 100 years. This is unique in the entire thoroughbred breed. Ibidem, the founder of this mare line, was bought by the family of the banker Gerson von Bleichröder for the Schlenderhan breed in 1907 after a successful racing career (including a victory in the Diana Prize ) . Although it died in 1915 at the age of only 12, it left a tremendous legacy there, including Adlerflug 9 German and 2 English derby winners, the champions Galileo and Sea The Stars . Important stopovers in Adlerflug's mother line are the Derby and Diana double winners of 1949 Asterblüte and their great-granddaughter Anatevka , who together with Schlenderhans Lombard formed the dream couple in German thoroughbred breeding in the post-war period. Like the aforementioned Galileo and Sea The Stars, Adlerflug is a great-grandson of this couple, with Galileo having established himself as Europe's leading stallion for many years. Adlerflug's sire In The Wings (1986–2004) was one of the best sons of the important sire Sadler's Wells , who in turn was a son of the trademark stallion Northern Dancer . Adlerflug inherited the four white feet and the pronounced blaze from his father. Adlerflug also passes many white badges on to his descendants. Not only through Adlerflug, but also through his sons Soldier Hollow and Mamool , In the Wings exerts a significant influence on German thoroughbred breeding.

Racing performance

After he gave up his maidenhood in Bremen on April 6, 2007, Adlerflug ended up unplaced in a derby preliminary examination in Mülheim. In the "Grand Prix of Hannover Airport" on May 28, 2007, however, he was able to rehabilitate himself impressively and won this list race , which the derby winners of 2005 (Nicaron) and 2006 (Schiaparelli) had already won, very convincingly with 5 lengths.

On July 1, 2007, Adlerflug won the »138. German Derby «in Hamburg-Horn . For his new coach, Jens Hirschberger, he already achieved his first victory in his debut derby. Adlerflug won the race ahead of Antek and Anton Chekhov with an outstanding performance and 7 lengths ahead. With the victory of Adlerflug, Gestüt Schlenderhan secured prize money plus a breeder's premium totaling € 631,400 in its 17th success in the German Derby. The last win for Schlenderhan was previously with Stuyvesant in 1976.

On September 2, 2007, Adlerflug competed in the 135th Grand Prix of Baden and was only barely defeated by Quijano after running an explosive final straight in Hamburg-Horn. However, at the so-called "kink" of the Baden home straight he had to turn around an opponent, which in the end may have cost him the decisive meters to victory. As in Hamburg-Horn and Hanover, Frederik Johansson was booked as a jockey for this race, in which, among other things, the Galopper of the Year , Prince Flori , could be distanced.

Adlerflug competed in its first race in 2008 on April 27 at the »73. Gerling Prize «at the Cologne-Weidenpesch horse racing track . Had to be content with a disappointing 8th place. With a rate of 29:10 at the totalizator , he started as the favorite, and after a very fast race, he had to admit defeat to a superior Oriental Tiger at an early stage about 300 meters from the finish . In the 112th Hansa-Preis , a group 2 race over 2400 meters, Adlerflug competed in his second race on the track in Hamburg-Horn on June 29, 2008. Ridden by jockey Terrenc Hellier, Adlerflug met old friends from the Derby such as Prince Flori , Anton Chekhov and Sommersturm . With a gap of 1¾ lengths to second-placed It's Gino and about 300 meters from the line clearly beaten by Egerton , he finished third.

In the Germany Prize , Adlerflug crossed the finish line ahead of Quijano and It's Gino . In this Group 1 race over 2400 meters, on heavy ground, Adlerflug said goodbye to the front of the field in a confident manner. In general, Adlerflug performed at its best under such ground conditions. On soft or even deep ground, he was certainly one of the best stayers of his time in all of Europe.

On September 7, 2008, Adlerflug competed for the second time in the Baden Grand Prix at the Iffezheim racecourse . At the same time as the second start on this track, he finished second as in the previous year. After a very good race, he finally stayed 2½ lengths behind the Hamburg gallop Kamsin from the Blankenese stable. Adlerflug started with Frederik Johansson as the favorite.

Adlerflug started the year 2009 only just beaten with a promising 3rd place in the Prix Ganay . In the last training session before the planned start at the Grand Prix de Chantilly , Adlerflug suffered a severe fracture on May 26, 2009. He was immediately taken to specialists at Newmarket Equine Hospital Newmarket who were able to save his life, but his racing career was over.

Career as a stallion

In November 2009 Adlerflug was set up as a stallion at the Harzburg Stud . The Harzburg stud also acquired a 62.5% share in Adlerflug. The remaining shares are distributed among the Görlsdorf, Bona, Brümmerhof and Schlenderhan studs and the individuals Katharina Lafrentz and Gregor Vischer. Out of his first year, born in 2011, the group I winner Ito , bred by the Schlenderhan Stud, stands out, who is now a stallion himself at the Ammerland Stud. Other top horses from this year are the group winner and group I placed Wunder , the multiple list winner Swacadelic , who was exported to Australia, and the group II placed Spend The Cash . Adlerflug's 2nd year is led by the only 1.56 meter tall winner of the 2016 Baden Grand Prix, Iquitos . The best offspring from his 3rd year are the Derby second and group II winner Savoir Vivre , the group winner Moonshiner , the group II winner Meergörl and the runner-up in the Italian Oaks Gambissara . Savoir ViIre also achieved a good eighth place in the prestigious Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 2016 and was even the best three-year-old in the field. Overall, Adlerflug's entry as a stallion can be described as very successful. He inherits a lot of class and stamina, but little precociousness. Hardness and health are not necessarily the characteristics of his offspring either. These generally only reach the zenith of their performance at the age of 4, so that a lot can still be expected from Savoir Vivre and Moonshiner 2017 in particular.

After the NordLB withdrew as the owner of the Harzburg stud in 2016 and the stud operations there was at least temporarily suspended, Adlerflug moved back to his home stud Schlenderhan in October 2016 to take the place of Monsun, a sire of the century who died in 2012 . With the change of stud there is also a significant increase in the stud fee from € 5,500 to € 12,000. This makes Adlerflug Germany's second most expensive stallion after the Soldier Hollow mentioned above.
