Lombard (born May 21, 1967; † 14 September 1994), was a race horse of the race Thoroughbred , drawn from Schlenderhan stud . The chestnut stallion with a conspicuous, elongated blaze was the first German horse racing horse to achieve a lifetime profit of more than one million DM.
Lombard goes back in direct paternal line in the 20th generation to Eclipse , with whom he shared the chestnut color and the spectacular galloping ability. The stallion was voted Galopper of the Year in 1971 and 1972 .
In 1970, Lombard narrowly missed the German Triple Crown when he won the Henckel Race in Gelsenkirchen and the German St. Leger in Dortmund, but came second behind Alpenkönig in the German Derby in Hamburg-Horn . Second place in the German Derby was extremely unfortunate, as there was initially a false start in the race, but Lombard had already covered a significant distance at racing speed and he was only intercepted by Alpenkönig in the last few meters in the actual race.
