Alpenkönig (* 1967 , † 1997 ) was an English thoroughbred horse . He was bred from the alpine lark at the Schlenderhan Stud by Tamerlane.

Racing career

Alpenkönig showed talent at the beginning of his career, but was completely overshadowed by his 4 cm taller stable mate Lombard . As a two-year-old, he won the Junior Prize in Düsseldorf , but was clearly defeated by Lombard in the winter favorite .

As a three-year-old he was only third in the Union race behind Octavio and Lombard, so that it was only after a long hesitation that he was nominated for the German Derby by the Schlenderhan Stud . But there his big hour struck when he intercepted the favorite Lombard shortly before the finish and won the race. The Derby victory was happy, because Lombard had used a lot of power in a false start, but the spell was broken. At Schlenderhan, the Alpenkönig was now the first horse in the stable. He won the Grand Prix of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Aral Cup , but he delivered his biggest race at the Grand Prix of Baden , when he had to prove himself against strong foreign competition. No horse drawn in Germany had won this race since 1962. When turning into the home straight, Alpenkönig was pushed aside by the competition, but was able to catch the escaped Cortez shortly before the finish. At the European Prize , Alpenkönig should meet his stable rival Lombard again. However, he injured himself so badly in preparatory training that his racing career was ended. In 1970 he was voted Galopper of the Year by the television audience .

Breeding career

Alpenkönig was also successful as a sire, winning the championship for sire horses in Germany in 1978 and 1980 . At almost 30 years of age he was very old for an English thoroughbred.
