The championship of sire horses (also the list of stallions or stallions ) is an annual championship in horse racing (but also in trotting, jumping and dressage ). This is not a direct sporting competition, but the victorious father horse is determined on the basis of statistics about the racing prizes (prize money in races) won by his direct offspring (children).

Such statistics are also used in other countries, in England since 1751. They are used for the general comparison of the breeding successes of father horses. All racing prizes that the offspring of each breeding stallion (so-called breeding stallion) have won in a country during a (racing) year are added up. In principle, the country in which the race was held applies and not the country in which a descendant was born or is trained.

The stallion whose offspring have the highest total winnings is called the champion of sire horses . These and all other official horse racing statistics are published in the annual racing calendar. In the USA the corresponding title is Leading Sire , in France it is called Tête de liste des étalons .

In addition to the annual championship for sire horses , the championship for sire horses from dam mares (maternal grandfathers of racing horses) is also common internationally. The valuation modalities in both championships are the same.

The statistics are maintained by the respective Jockey Club in the country. The Jockey Club is the national umbrella organization for horse racing, comparable to the DFB in football. The directorate for thoroughbred breeding and racing is the jockey club responsible for German horse racing .

The most successful in the championship for sire horses in Germany were Oleander and Ticino with nine titles each, ahead of Chamant with seven.

Stallion lists in warmblood breeding

In warmblood breeding , too , the breeding value of the stallions registered with the FN is assessed based on their own performance and the success of their offspring in sport. The so-called breeding value estimation is carried out for dressage and jumping .
