Kumertau ( Russian Кумертау , Bashkir Күмертау ) is a city in the Republic of Bashkortostan ( Russia ) with 62,851 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the western edge of the Southern Urals , about 240 km south of the republic capital Ufa on the Karagaika River in the Kama river system .

Kumertau is surrounded by the territory of the Kujurgasinski Rajon , but does not belong to it, but is administratively directly subordinate to the oblast.

history

Kumertau was established in 1947 (according to other sources in 1948) with the start of the development of a nearby lignite deposit ; it was given the status of an urban-type settlement in 1949 and town charter in 1953.
