Meschgorje ( Russian Межгорье ) is a city in the Russian republic of Bashkortostan with 17,352 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the southern Urals, not far from its highest elevation, Yamantau , about 200 km southeast of the republic capital Ufa on the Maly Insert river in the Kama river system , west of Belorezk .

Meschgorje is administratively directly subordinate to the republic and one of the "closed cities" of Russia. It consists of the settlements (now districts) Tatly ( Татлы ) and Solnetschny ( Солнечный , formerly Kusjelga / Кузъелга ), 23 kilometers apart .

It is believed that this is an underground military complex that can withstand a nuclear strike.

history

Originated around 1979 and initially designated with the cover name Ufa-105 or Belorezk-16 , the place received city rights in 1995 as Meschgorje (Russian meschdu gorami for between the mountains ).
