Salawat ( Russian Салава́т [sʌlʌvʌt] , Bashkir Салауат ) is a city with 156,095 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the Republic of Bashkortostan ( Russia ).

Salawat is located in the east of the European part of Russia and in the western part of the South Urals , on the left bank of the Belaya River and around 180 km south of the republic's capital Ufa . The closest town is Ischimbai , 11 km northeast of Salawat.

history

Salawat was founded in 1948 as a settlement during the construction of a new oil processing and chemical combine, which among other things also used prisoners. In 1954 the place got its official status as a city. The name Salawat was chosen in honor of the Bashkir national hero Salawat Yulayev . A gasometer is shown in the upper right corner of the city's coat of arms, symbolizing the city's strong focus on the processing of fossil raw materials.

Economy and Transport

Today the city is an important center of the chemical industry. The former chemical combine, now known as Salawatnefteorgsintes , is the main business here. It is partly owned by the Gazprom Group and specializes in the production of fuels and other end products for the oil industry. The company's production facility is connected to several oil and gas fields in Bashkortostan and the Orenburg Oblast via a pipeline network. There are also metal processing and glass industries in the city, as well as smaller textile factories.

Salawat is on a road from Ufa via Sterlitamak to Orenburg and on the parallel railway line on which it has a train station. An independent tram network has been in operation within the city since 1957.
