Meleus ( Russian Мелеуз , Bashkir Мәләүез ) is a city in the Republic of Bashkortostan ( Russia ) with 61,390 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the western edge of the Southern Urals , about 200 km south of the republic capital Ufa at the confluence of the Meleus in the Belaja , a left tributary of the Kama .

Meleus is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

history

Meleus was created in the second half of the 18th century and has been a station on the Ufa – Orenburg postal route since the 1780s . At the end of the 19th century, the place was an important trade and handicraft center of southeast Bashkiria, received the status of an urban-type settlement in 1938 and town charter in 1958.
