Belebei is located in the west of Bashkortostan, near the borders of the republic with the Orenburg Oblast and the Republic of Tatarstan , about 180 km southwest of the subject capital Ufa . The nearest town is Abdulino , about 60 km as the crow flies from Belebei.
history
The place was first mentioned in 1715 as a small Chuvash settlement called Belebejewo. In 1781 Belebei received the status of a district town within the Ufa governorate . Up until the 20th century, agriculture and trade were predominantly carried out here. The city received a strong growth spurt from the 1950s when oil reserves were developed in its vicinity .

Belebei is now regarded as the location of the mineral oil and gas industry, which is mainly operated by the regional oil company Baschneft . There are also metal processing and food factories in the city.
