Ufa governorate

The Ufa Governorate ( Russian Уфимская губерния / Ufimskaja gubernija ) was an administrative unit in the Russian Empire on the southern edge of the Ural Mountains . It is similar in area and location to modern Bashkortostan . It was bounded by the following neighboring governorates (clockwise from the north): Vyatka , Perm , Orenburg , Samara and Kazan .

It had 122,018 km², the capital was Ufa .

After a governorship in Ufa had already existed from 1781–1796, the area was separated from the Orenburg governorate in 1865 and existed until the Bashkir ASSR was founded in 1919.

The governorate had 2,196,642 inhabitants in 1897.

Of these, 834,135 Russians, 899,910 Bashkirs (plus 39,955 Teptjaren ), 184,817 Tatars , 80,608 Cheremis , 60616 Chuvash , 37289 Mordvins , 22507 Votiaks and 20,957 Meschtscherjaken .

There was a slight majority of Muslims among the population, Orthodox Christians made up about 43%.

The harvest in 1905 resulted in tons: rye 693,392, wheat 204,819, spelled 109,946, millet 85,739, buckwheat 75,128, peas 40,016, oats 484,259, potatoes 176,939. In 1904 the number of livestock was 700,000 horses, 820,000 cattle, 1,508,000 sheep, 200,000 goats and 130,000 pigs. Fishing and hunting were important industries. In addition to the lumber for ships, the forests supplied raffia, potash, pitch, tar and coal. The mining industry mainly supplied iron ores; In 1902, 110.536 tons of pig iron were produced in the smelting works. The most important industrial enterprise was the ironworks in Zlatoust. In addition, industry was poorly developed (1900: 152 commercial establishments with 14,691 workers and a production value of 7.3 million rubles) and was mainly limited to grain milling, distillery and the like. The trade mainly sold woodwork, animal skins, hides and honey.
