Udmurten
The Udmurt (also outdated Votiaks , proper name удмурт ) are a Finno-Ugric people , which consists of about 91% in the Republic of Udmurtia lives. In the 2002 census , around 637,000 people professed a Udmurt nationality . The Udmurts fall into the two main groups of Watka and Kalmes .
history
The Udmurts, who are close to the Komi , were in close contact with the Volga Bulgarians from an early age , whose influence has left its mark, especially in the language. In the 13th century they came under Tatar rule until they were subjected to Russia by Ivan IV in 1552 . The Udmurts opposed Russian rule and the associated Christianization until the 18th century.
Language and identity
Although 464,000 Udmurts said they spoke Udmurt , Russian predominates in everyday life . In the meantime, however, a Finno-Ugric Udmurt national consciousness is developing. Udmurt representatives take part in the Finnish-Ugric World Congress .

The majority of the Udmurts today profess Orthodox Christianity . In addition to a Sunni-Muslim minority, there are also supporters of North Asian animism .
