Menselinsk ( Russian Мензелинск ; Tatar Минзәлә Minzələ ) is a city in the Republic of Tatarstan ( Russia ) with 16,476 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 290 km east of the republic capital Kazan on the left bank of the Menselja not far from its former confluence with the Ik , which here, however, has formed the Nizhnekamsk reservoir together with the Kama since the late 1980s .

Menselinsk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

history

Menselinsk was built in 1652–1656 (according to other sources already 1584–1586) as a fortified settlement on the Menselja river, after which it was named. At the end of the 17th century it was the most important fortress along the Kama Line on the then border of Tsarist Russia . There are indications that there was a settlement here as early as the times of the Volga Bulgarian Empire (before the 12th century).

In 1781 the place received city rights as the administrative center of a district ( Ujesds ) of the Ufa governorate .
