history
After extensive oil discoveries in the area in the early 1940s, an oil-powered thermal power plant was built there, the first block of which went into operation in 1944. 1945 began the establishment of an associated settlement, which was given urban-type settlement status in 1947; this year is also considered the year of foundation. The power station and settlement were named after a village about 4 km to the west, which is now called Staryje Urussu ("Old Urussu").
In 1957 the administrative seat of the Jutasinski rajon, which had existed since 1935, was moved from the village of Jutasa, 12 km to the west , to Urussu. The Rajon was also renamed Urusski rajon, but was dissolved in 1963. In 1991 another Rajon was spun off from the territory of the Bawlinski rajon (with its seat in Bawly ), again with its seat in Urussu, but under the original name Jutasinski rajon.
