Tschistopol ( Russian Чистополь ; Tatar Чистай / Çistay ) is a city in Russia in the Republic of Tatarstan . It has 60,755 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and is located around 140 km southeast of the republic capital Kazan , on the left bank of the Kama .

history

The place arose at the beginning of the 18th century as Tschistoje Pole , literally translated as "clean field" or translated as "wide field". At first it was a village that already had about 1000 inhabitants at a census in 1763. Agriculture was practiced, especially grain cultivation.

During the Russian territorial reform at the end of the 18th century, Tschistoje Pole was given city status as the administrative seat of a Ujezd . The abbreviated name Tschistopol only gradually became common. In the 19th century, the city developed into an important grain trading center in the Volga region, and industry later developed here. The Chistopol Rajon is still an important grain-growing area.
