Kamskoje Ustje ( Russian Ка́мское У́стье ; Tatar Кама Тамагы / Kama Tamağı ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Tatarstan ( Russia ) with 4482 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The settlement lies some 70 km (distance) south of the Republic capital Kazan on the high right bank of the Volga River opposite the mouth of its largest tributary Kama (Russian kamskoye ustye for Kamamündung ). The Volga, which is dammed up to the Kuibyshev reservoir , reaches a width of 12 km below Kamskoye Ustye, the Kama in front of the mouth - over 20 km. At Kamskoye Ustye, the left bank of the river protrudes like a foothill into the reservoir; the 134 meter high mountain called Lobatsch rises steeply 81 meters above the water level.
Kamskoye Ustye is the administrative center of the Kamskoye Ustye district of the same name . Almost 57% of the town's residents are Tatars , 43% Russians .
history
The place has its origins in the village of Bogorodskoje, which was founded at the beginning of the 17th century below the current settlement on the bank, which is now flooded by Lake Volga. It was first mentioned in 1692 as a property of the Metropolitan of Kazan and Svyashsk .
Because of its favorable location only a few kilometers above the mouth of the Kama, trade, supplying river shipping, ship repair and fishing developed here. From the end of the 18th century the village belonged to the Ujesd Tetjuschi of the Kazan Governorate .
Towards the end of the 19th century, the village was already known by its unofficial second name Kamskoje Ustye . During this time, up to 10,000 people stayed in Bogorodskoje every spring to take on ships or as towers after the ice on the Volga and Kama had melted .
On August 4, 1925, Kamskoje Ustje became the sole place name in place of the religiously “biased” Bogorodskoje (from Russian Bogorodiza for Mother of God ). In 1939 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement. When at the end of the 1950s the old districts located directly on the Volga ridge were flooded as a result of the damming of the Kuibyshev reservoir, the place further above was partially rebuilt.
Since 1994, Kamskoje Ustje has been a partner municipality of the city of Ludwigslust in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .
