Kamskije Poljany ( Russian Ка́мские Поля́ны ; Tatar Кама Аланы Kama Alanı ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Tatarstan ( Russia ) with 15,795 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement is located in the Volga region about 150 kilometers (as the crow flies) southeast of the republic capital Kazan , on the left, high bank of the largest Volga tributary, the Kama , below the confluence of the Vyatka .

Kamskije Polyany belongs to the Nizhnekamsk Raion ; its administrative center, the city of Nizhnekamsk , is a good 30 kilometers to the northeast.

history

The settlement was created in the early 1980s in connection with the planned construction of the Tatarstan nuclear power plant (Tatarskaya AES), almost ten kilometers west of the town on the banks of the Kama. A small village of the same name previously existed at this point, the exact year of its foundation is unknown and possibly in the middle of the 18th century.

On December 27, 1981 urban-type settlement status was granted. Your name is the Russian for "Kama Glades " (see. City Vyatskiye Polyany , "Vyatka-clearings" in the neighboring Kirov Oblast ). In the period that followed, mainly multi-storey prefabricated buildings were built .

In 1990 the construction of the power plant was stopped, in 1993 it was completely stopped, mainly for financial reasons.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Kamskije Poljany, companies from the construction, mechanical engineering, textile and agricultural industries have settled. A “technology park” with companies from the building materials and chemical-pharmaceutical industries is being set up.

The resumption of nuclear power plant construction was discussed again and again, but was most recently rejected - at least for this location - by the parliament of the Republic of Tatarstan with reference to ecological concerns.

There is a road connection in the direction of the district center of Nizhnekamsk and to the regional road R239 from Kazan via Chistopol and Almetyevsk to Bugulma, which runs further south . An approximately 60-kilometer-long railway line, which was initially set up for the construction of the nuclear power plant starting from the Sainsk station on the Akbash - Naberezhnye Chelny - Agrys route , only for freight traffic, has been out of service since the construction freeze.
