List of large settlements in Russia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an alphabetical list of major settlements in Russia . It contains all localities with a population of at least 10,000 (data basis: 2010 census) that do not have the status of “city” ( Russian город ); these are included in the list of cities in Russia .

The list therefore includes localities of the following types:

  • Urban-type settlement (посёлок городского типа): these include the Russian urbanization statistics for urban population and are functional rather of industry (workers' settlement, рабочий посёлок ) or tourism bound ( " health resort settlement" курортный посёлок or Datschensiedlung , дачный посёлок ) than to agriculture
  • rural localities ( сельские населённые пункты ) with the subtypes:
    • Selo ( село , village ): tends to be a larger village, central or (partly historical) church village with an administrative function; since the Soviet era, for example, the seat of a village soviet or a collective farm
    • Derewnja ( деревня , village ): tends to be a smaller village with no administrative function or (historically) church
    • Staniza ( станица ): like Selo, but with an ethnic and cultural characteristic: predominantly inhabited by and founded by Cossacks
    • Possjolok ( посёлок (сельского типа) , settlement ): often start-ups since the beginning of the 20th century; functionally more tied to agriculture than urban-type settlements

In the alphabetical list, the affiliation to these (sub) types is indicated by abbreviations after the Russian name of the respective place:

  • D: Derevnia
  • P: Possjolok
  • S: Selo
  • SST: urban-type settlement
  • ST: Staniza

Note: the boundaries between the individual sub-types of rural settlements are blurred. Each rural settlement is officially assigned to one of the subtypes. In the event of changes in the population or function, however, the assignment often only changes after a long period of time or not at all, often it is historically determined. There are other sub-types of rural settlements in Russia, but no localities with at least 10,000 inhabitants assigned to them.
