Novoagansk ( Russian: Новоага́нск ) is an urban-type settlement in the Khanty and Mansi Autonomous Okrug / Ugra ( Russia ) with 10,343 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The settlement is located in the central part of the West Siberian lowlands , about km as the crow flies northeast of the district administrative center Khanty-Mansiysk on the right bank of the Agan, which flows into the Ob tributary Tromjogan .
Novoagansk belongs to the Nizhnevartovsk Raion and is a good 110 km as the crow flies north of the administrative center of Nizhnevartovsk . The settlement is also the approximately 7 km upstream (northeast) lying "national" village Warjogan ( Варьёган ), of whose 660 inhabitants 528 are members of the indigenous peoples of Siberia ( Chanten and Waldnenzen ).
history
The upstream village of Varyogan was established in the 1930s (officially 1936), when forced resettlers from the European part of the country came to the area as part of the Stalinist repression .
During the exploration and development of the West Siberian oil and gas deposits , a base of the Agan geological oil exploration expedition was built in 1966 in place of today's Novoagansk , around which a housing estate soon grew. In 1978 it was given the status of an urban-type settlement , the name of which is derived from that of the river and the Russian novo- for new- .

Economy and Infrastructure
Novoagansk is one of the centers of oil exploration and production in the Rajon.
Road connection exists upstream to Raduzhny and from there in a southerly direction to Nizhnevartovsk.
