history
Khanty-Mansiysk was founded in December 1930 as a settlement Ostjako-Wogulsk ( Остяко-Вогульск ), a good four kilometers north of the settlement of Samarowo ( Самарово , formerly Samarowski jam ), which has been known since the end of the 15th century . It was named after the Ostyaks, which were still common at that time, for the Khanty people and Woguls for that of the Mansi , and from 1936 had the status of an urban-type settlement . On October 23, 1940, the place received its current name and on January 27, 1950 the town charter, whereby the settlement Samarowo (since 1930 administrative seat of the Samarowski rajon) was incorporated as a district.
In February 1932, Ostjako-Wogulsk took over from Samarowo the function of the administrative seat of the National Circle of Ostyaks and Woguls, which was created on December 10, 1930 and renamed the National Circle of Khanty and Mansi in 1940 and transformed into the Autonomous Okrug (Okrug) of Khanty and Mansi in 1978 . In 1950, when Samarowo was incorporated, the city also became the seat of the Samarowski rajon, which was only called Chanty-Mansijski rajon from September 14, 1964 . Since 1992 Khanty-Mansiysk has been the capital of the Khanty and Mansi Autonomous Okrug / Ugra .
Khanty-Mansiysk is one of the most prosperous cities in Russia due to the abundant oil production industry in the Autonomous Okrug . The city is also a popular tourist center for skiing and snowboarding.
