Poikowski ( Russian По́йковский ) is an urban-type settlement in the West Siberian Autonomous Okrug of Khanty and Mansi / Ugra ( Russia ) with 25,594 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The settlement is located in the West Siberian lowlands a good 150 kilometers east of the administrative center of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug on the left bank of the Bolshaya Yuganskaya , the southernmost left arm of the Ob on this section . The main arm of the river runs about 30 kilometers north of Poikowski. Not far from the settlement, the Poika (or Poik ) river flows into the Ob-Arm, which gave the place its name.
Poikowski belongs to Nefteyugansk Raion ; whose administrative center Nefteyugansk is about 50 kilometers east of Poikowski.
history
Poikowski was built in 1964 as an oil workers' settlement on the site of the old village of Mushkino , which was named after its founders, the Mushkin brothers. In 1967 the place got its current name after the river and on May 15, 1968 the status of an urban-type settlement .
In 1998 Poikowski was recognized as the best developed urban settlement in a regional competition.

Chess tournament
Poikowski became a household name in the chess world because an annual world-class tournament has been held here since 2000, named after the 12th world champion Anatoly Karpov .

Economy and Infrastructure
The main branch of the economy is oil production .
The regional road R404 , which connects Surgut and Nefteyugansk with Khanty-Mansiysk, runs south past Poikowski.
