Belojarski ( Russian Белоя́рский ) is a city in Western Siberia , in the Khanty and Mansi Autonomous Okrug / Ugra ( Russia ), with 20,283 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the northern flank of the Siberian ridge in the West Siberian lowlands on the Kasym , a right tributary of the Ob . The climate is continental.

The city of Belojarsky is the administrative center of the raion of the same name in the north-west of the autonomous region.

history

Belojarsky was established in 1969 as a base for the construction of natural gas pipelines from the Yamal Peninsula via Nadym to the European part of Russia. The place name refers to the light rocks (Russian бе́лый / bely - white, light) that emerge on the steeply sloping river bank (Russian яр / jar ).

In 1973 the place became an urban-type settlement, in 1988 it received city rights with the establishment of the raion of the same name.

Culture, education and sights

There is a small history and local museum in Belojarsky. There are branches of several regional higher educational institutions.

economy

The main branch of the economy is the operation and maintenance of the natural gas pipelines through Tyumentransgas (Тюментрансгаз). After oil discoveries in the area, companies like RITEKBelojarskneft (РИТЭКБелоярскнефть) began to exploit the deposits.

Rather of local importance are reindeer and fur animal husbandry as well as fishing, which are carried out in the Rajon.
