Surgut ( Russian Сургу́т ) is a major Russian city on the Ob River in the West Siberian lowlands . It belongs to the autonomous district of the Khanty and Mansi / Ugra and has 306,675 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
history
Surgut was founded in 1594, making it one of the oldest cities in Siberia . The place name comes from the Chantic language and means something like "area rich in fish". In the 17th and 18th centuries, Surgut was one of the larger towns in the Asian part of Russia and an important settlement for Russian colonists in Siberia. By the end of the 18th century, however, it lost its former importance and the city status it gained in 1708. In 1930 Surgut became part of the then newly formed Khanty and Mansi autonomous community as a settlement.
After large deposits of crude oil and natural gas had been discovered near the village in the 1950s and 1960s , rapid development set in again: In 1965 Surgut regained city status, and by 1970 its population doubled to over 30,000 inhabitants, at the end of the In the 1970s, the city mark of 100,000 inhabitants was exceeded.

In the city, the Russians make up the majority of the population. According to the 2010 census, 64.5% of city residents are ethnically Russian. Another 6 percent are Ukrainians , 5.2% are Tatars , 1.7% Bashkirs , 1.4% Azerbaijanis and 1 percent are Chuvashes . 1,252 Germans also live in Surgut , which corresponds to 0.42% of the total population.
The demographic development in Surgut was positive from 2002 to 2012. The birth rate has increased by almost 70 percent since then, while the death rate has decreased noticeably. For years, Surgut has been characterized by stable population growth. Between December 2011 and February 2012 the population increased by 6,100, which is unusually high by Russian standards.
Average life expectancy in 2012 was around 69 years. Men live on average 67 and women 75 years old.
There are more men than women in the city (51 to 49 percent).
The unemployment rate is only 0.25 percent because of the well-developed raw materials industry.

Religions
In Surgut there are more than ten Russian Orthodox churches, prayer houses for Gospel Christians and Jehovah's Witnesses , a Roman Catholic church and a Sunni Muslim mosque .

Economy and Infrastructure
Surgut is considered to be one of the most important centers of the oil production industry in all of Russia. The city also forms a hub in the West Siberian pipeline network. This is where the oil and gas pipelines from Nizhnevartovsk and Novy Urengoy and those to Novosibirsk , Perm and Chelyabinsk meet.
The most important companies based in the city are Surgutneftegas and Surgutgasprom , the latter belonging to the state-owned Gazprom group . The city also has two of the largest thermal power plants in the world, GRES-1 and GRES-2. These belong to OGK-4 , 78.3 percent of which are owned by E.ON Russia Power .
Surgut has its own university and has an airport , railway connection and an inland port on the Ob. A few kilometers below the city, a railway bridge built in the 1970s and the Surgut road bridge opened in 2000 span the Ob. These are the two crossings of the river furthest downstream, to the mouth of which it is a good 1200 kilometers from there.

Since 1993 there has been nationwide internet reception in Surgut . There are currently ten different Internet service providers in the city , including Rostelekom and Mobile TeleSystems .
