Kogalym ( Russian Когалым ) is a city in West Siberia , in the Khanty and Mansi Autonomous Okrug / Ugra ( Russia ) with 58,181 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located north of the Ob and about 125 km northeast of the city of Surgut in the West Siberian lowlands in the area of ​​the confluence of the Kirill-Vysyagun (Кирилл-Высъягун) in the Ingujagun (Ингуягун). The climate is continental.

Kogalym is located on the territory of the Surgut Rajon , but is directly subordinate to the Autonomous Okrug.

The city is located on the Surgut - Korotschajewo - Novy Urengoy railway line and has an airport.

history

Established in 1975 as a settlement for geologists and oil workers as well as in connection with the construction of the railway line to Novy Urengoy , the place received city rights on August 15, 1985. The place name is derived from the chantic words koch or kog (кох, ког; long ) and alyng (алынг; beginning , beginning ), and denotes the elongated origin of a river.

economy

Kogalym is a center of the petroleum industry . The production in the surrounding oil fields began in 1978. The headquarters of Kogalymneftegaz (Когалымнефтегаз), one of the three founding companies of the largest Russian oil company Lukoil, is located in the city .

The airline Kogalymavia is based in Kogalym.

Airport

The small town has an international airport, the Kogalym International Airport (Международный аэропорт Когалым) (IATA: KGP, ICAO: USRK). It is located approx. 9 km southeast of Kogalym and is currently served by UTair Aviation (Kogalym-Moscow- Vnukovo ) and Yamal Airlines (Kogalym- Yekaterinburg ).

Education, culture and sights

In the city there are 10 general education schools, branches of Tyumen State University (Тюменский государственный университет), the Tyumen State Oil and Gas University (Тюменский государственный нефтегазовый университет) and the Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radio Electronics (Томский государственный университет систем управления и радиоэлектроники ). In 1996 the KogalymNIPIneft (КогалымНИПИнефть), a scientific research and project institute of the petroleum industry, was founded.

The city has a museum of local history and art, a newly built Orthodox church and a mosque, as well as an ice palace .
