Megion ( Russian Мегион ) is a city in West Siberia , in the Khanty and Mansi Autonomous Okrug / Ugra ( Russia ) with 49,449 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located on the right (northern) bank of the Ob in the West Siberian lowlands about 25 km west of Nizhnevartovsk . Near the city, the eponymous river arm Mega flows back into the main stream of the Ob (the chantic word mechi or megi denotes a sharp bend in the river). The climate is continental.
The town forms a separate urban district, the territory of the Rajons enclosed Nizhnevartovsk. The urban-type settlement Vysoki (Высокий) , which was founded in 1982, has 6933 inhabitants, so that the total population is 56,422 (2010).
history
A Chantic settlement in the area of today's city Megion has been known since 1810. In 1912 it appeared in official documents as Magajon (Магайон), in the 1940s as the village of Megion. In 1961 there were the first oil discoveries in the area in the middle Ob area. In 1962 an oil workers' settlement was established. In 1964 it was given the status of an urban-type settlement , and on July 23, 1980, town charter .

Culture and sights
Megion has a local museum called the Regional Historical, Cultural and Ecological Center .
Economy and Infrastructure
Megion is one of the centers of oil production in Western Siberia. The main company is Slavneft-Megionneftegaz (Славнефть-Мегионнефтегаз).
The city is located on the Surgut –Nizhnevartovsk railway line, which opened in 1979 ; the station is outside the city, about 15 km from the center near Vysoki.
