William of Eiff

Wilhelm von Eiff (born September 11, 1890 in Göppingen ; † May 9, 1943 in Stuttgart ) was a German painter and glass artist.

Von Eiff attended secondary school in Göppingen from 1897 to 1904. This was followed by a four-year apprenticeship in glass engraving at the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF), Göppingen branch. In 1911 and 1912 he attended the art academy in Paris and studied painting. He received his first commissioned work in glass and stone cutting. In 1913 he attended a course in life drawing at the Kunstgewerbeschule Vienna and in 1914 he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Stuttgart in the metal class with Paul Haustein .

From 1914 to 1918 he did military service, where he was repeatedly given leave of absence to produce public contracts. From 1919 to 1921 he had his own glass engraving studio in Stuttgart. From 1921 to 1943 he had a teaching position at the Stuttgart School of Applied Arts, specializing in glass and precious stone processing. From 1928 to 1932 Wilhelm von Eiff was a member of the Deutscher Werkbund . In 1928 he was one of the first members of the German Glass Technology Society (DGG). In 1937 he took part in the World Exhibition in Paris , where he received the Grand Prix for artistic glass and gemstone cuts and a certificate of honor for etched windows.

Von Eiff was one of the most important German glass artists between the two world wars, alongside Richard Süssmuth , Bruno Mauder and Wilhelm Wagenfeld . He mainly created gifts of honor and memory, shrines, cups, vases, individually tailored to certain people. His specialty was the relief cut, especially the portrait cut. Many drawings of anthroposophical content were made, but only a few paintings. The estate is in the Stuttgart City Archives.
