List of cities in Russia |
Nefteyugansk ( Russian: Нефтеюга́нск ) is a Russian city on the Ob River in western Siberia in the Khanty and Mansi Autonomous Okrug / Ugra . It is located in one of the most important oil production areas in Russia and has 122,855 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
history
Nefteyugansk is a relatively young city. It was initially built as a workers' settlement near an oil field that was discovered in 1961 and opened up a year later . The settlement got the name Nefteyuganski , derived from neft = petroleum and Yuganskaya Ob , the name of a branch of the Ob flowing nearby. In 1966, the state oil production company " Juganskneftegas " was founded in the settlement , which today exists as a joint stock company and belongs to the Russian oil company Rosneft . On October 16, 1967, the expanding settlement was named Nefteyugansk and the status of a district town; since then it has been the administrative center of Nefteyugansk Raion .
On June 26, 1998, the then mayor Vladimir Petukhov was shot dead in Nefteyugansk. The prosecution saw a connection with his resistance to the corrupt practices of the Yukos oil company owned by Mikhail Khodorkovsky . The chief of the Yukos security department was convicted, and Mikhail Khodorkovsky was later charged with murder.

economy
To date, oil production is by far the largest industry in Nefteyugansk, statistically every seventh ton of Russian crude oil is produced here. Since most of the city's population is employed in the very lucrative oil production industry, Nefteyugansk is one of the richest cities in all of Russia; the average income is far higher than in most other regions of Russia. The city is also considered to be a very "young" city, with an average age of the population of just over 30 years. The annual budget of Nefteyugansk in 2007 was around 4 billion rubles (about 117 million euros).
