Mobile TeleSystems ( MTS ; Russian Мобильные ТелеСистемы (MTC), Mobilnyje TeleSistemy (MTS)) is the largest mobile operator in Russia and the rest of the CIS . It has over 100 million customers (as of 2011). MTS is a joint partner with Vodafone in Russia. On October 31, 2008, Vodafone announced a partnership with MTS whereby Vodafone services would be available to MTS subscribers and both companies.
history
Mobile TeleSystems was founded in 1993 as a joint venture between the Moscow telephone company Moskowskaja Gorodskaja Telefonnaja Set (MGTS) , Russian Московская Городская Телефонная Сеть (53%) and the German companies Deutsche Telekom and Siemens AG (47%).
Between 2003 and 2005, Deutsche Telekom sold its shares in MTS for an estimated € 3 billion. The official reason given was the Group's necessary debt reduction. On September 14, 2007, Mobile TeleSystems acquired 80% of the shares in VivaCell (Armenia).
Shareholders
Mobile TeleSystems was transformed into a Russian stock corporation in 2000 . MTS is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Moscow Stock Exchange in the RTS index .
