Nornickel is the world 's leading nickel and palladium producer . Furthermore, in conjunction with its subsidiary Stillwater Mining Company ( Denver , Colorado ) , the company was ranked among the four largest platinum producers and one of the ten largest copper producers in the world. Nornickel also mines cobalt , rhodium , silver , gold , tellurium , selenium , iridium , ruthenium and coal .

history

The copper and nickel deposits of the Taimyr Peninsula had been known since the 17th century, but it wasn't until the 1920s that mining began in the Norilsk region. The government of the USSR created the Norilsk Combine on June 23, 1935 and thus the beginning of what is now the largest mining and metallurgy company in the country. Production began on March 10, 1939.

In the first two decades, Norilsk and the local nickel combine were built and operated almost exclusively by Gulag prisoners who were incarcerated in the Norilsk corrective labor camp (Russian short form: Noril-Lag), which existed from 1935 to 1956 . The number of inmates in this camp rose steadily until Stalin's death in 1953 and reached around 70,000 to 90,000 in the early 1950s. A total of 270,000 people passed through the camp, and 17,000 to 18,000 died in prison.

Also in the Murmansk Oblast on the Kola Peninsula emerged mining and for the promotion of copper and nickel - 1935 Seweronikel in Monchegorsk and 1940 Petschenganikel in Zapolyarny and Nikel .

On November 4, 1989, a government resolution united the three combines with two other companies and the Gipronickel Institute to form Norilsk Nickel , and another resolution on June 30, 1993 formed the joint stock company RAO Norilsk Nickel from the company . In 2000 the company was restructured and named Norilsk Gornaja Kompanija , but in 2001 another restructuring followed and a new name - GMK Norilsk Nickel .

In 2014 the company sold its interests in gold and nickel deposits (Lake Johnston, Cawse, Avalon, Black Swan, Silver Swan) in Western Australia .

Since 2014, Norilsk Nickel has been developing the Bystrinsky copper-gold-iron deposit near Tschita .

In July 2016, Norilsk Nickel renewed its corporate identity. The company now operates under the name Nornickel, and a new company logo has also been introduced.

In 2019 it was reported that Nornickel was working on a trading platform for the creation of crypto tokens for trading palladium .

At the end of May and beginning of June 2020 around 21,000 m³ of diesel fuel from the power plant operator NTEK, which is a subsidiary of Nornickel, flowed into the Ambarnaja near Norilsk . According to Norilsk Nickel, a diesel tank was damaged when the supporting pillars sank through the thawing permafrost . By June 9, 2020, around 23,000 m³ of soil had been disposed of and 2.4 km of oil barriers had been erected in the contaminated waters.

criticism

The mining of nickel has led to severe environmental pollution in the vicinity of Norilsk , which is why the city was closed to foreigners in November 2001. In 2006, the city was named one of the ten most polluted places in the world by the Blacksmith Institute . The main culprit is Norilsk Nickel.
