Harjavalta has been a center of the Finnish metal industry since the end of the Second World War, when a militarily important copper smelter was relocated from Imatra in Eastern Finland to Harjavalta in view of the Soviet advance . In the smelter, which today belongs to the Swedish Boliden group, up to 160,000 tons of anode copper are extracted annually, most of which are further processed in the company's copper refinery in Pori, 30 km away. In addition to copper, nickel is also smelted in Harjavalta.
politics
Administration
As a traditional industrial city, Harjavalta is a stronghold of the Finnish left. In the 2008 local elections, the Social Democrats achieved their best result nationwide. With a share of 44.4 votes, they hold 13 out of 27 seats in the municipal council, the highest decision-making body in municipal affairs. The left-wing alliance is also disproportionately strong, with 16.8% of the vote and four seats in Harjavalta. The second strongest force in the local council is the conservative National Collection Party with six seats, while the third people's party of Finland, the Center Party , with a single-digit election result and two seats, hardly plays a role. The Christian Democrats are also represented with two seats in the municipal council.
