Vesa Hakala (born December 5, 1968 in Harjavalta ) is a former Finnish ski jumper .

Career

Hakala, who was included in the Finnish national team at the beginning of 1988, jumped for the first time in Lahti in the Ski Jumping World Cup on March 6, 1988 . He finished jumping in 11th place. He was therefore also nominated for the squad for the following season and started on December 30, 1988 in Oberstdorf for the Four Hills Tournament . After a 36th place in Oberstdorf and a 17th place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen as well as a 22nd place in Innsbruck , he fell in the first jump in Bischofshofen and was only 90th and last. It was his last jumping in the 1988/89 World Cup season .

On December 16, 1989, he jumped for the first time in the World Cup on the normal hill in Sapporo, Japan . The results of the 1989/90 season were rather mediocre and he could only achieve two World Cup points in the entire season and ended up in 52nd place overall. The following season 1990/91 , however, was more successful. In the second competition of the season he was able to achieve his only podium finish of his career on December 16, 1990 in Sapporo with 3rd place. At the end of the season, Hakala was able to jump into the front of the World Cup for the first time with 9th place in the overall ranking of the Four Hills Tournament and 24th place in the overall World Cup ranking.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1991 in Val di Fiemme , he was able to reach 14th place in jumping on the normal hill and won the silver medal behind Austria in team jumping together with Ari-Pekka Nikkola , Raimo Ylipulli and Risto Laakkonen . In the 1991/92 season he could not build on the successes of the previous season and usually only ended up in the top 20.

It was not until the 1992/93 season that success came back. He achieved top 10 placements several times. In the overall ranking of the Four Hills Tournament in 1992/93 he was fifth and in the overall World Cup he was in the end on the 15th place. It was the most successful season of his career. In the Nordic World Ski Championships 1993 in Sweden's Falun he reached in jumping on the normal hill on the 12th, the 17th on the large hill and the team together with Janne Ahonen , Risto Jussilainen and Toni Nieminen 6th Place. In the 1993/94 season he only started in three World Cup competitions, in which he was able to achieve a top 10 placement with 7th place on the large hill in Sapporo. In 1995 he jumped two more World Cups in his home town of Lahti and ended his active career as a jumper on January 29, 1995 with a 23rd place.
