Risto Juhani Laakkonen (born May 6, 1967 in Kuopio ) is a former Finnish ski jumper . His greatest achievement was winning team gold at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville .

Career

He made his debut in the Ski Jumping World Cup on January 11, 1986 in Harrachov and immediately reached eighth place. In the following years he was one of the world's best. In 1988 and 1989 he won the world cup competition in Thunder Bay, Canada. In the winter of 1988/89 he emerged as the overall winner of the Four Hills Tournament without having won an individual competition; in Oberstdorf he was second, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen third, in Innsbruck seventh, and in Bischofshofen only tenth. In the overall World Cup, Laakkonen was seventh this season; it should remain in its best position.

He was able to celebrate further successes with the Finnish team. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1989 he was world champion with the team, then vice world champion in 1991 in Val di Fiemme . At the 1992 Winter Olympics , he won the gold medal with the team that also included Ari-Pekka Nikkola , Mika Laitinen , and Toni Nieminen . At the end of the season he ended his career.
