Tami Petri Antero Kiuru (born September 13, 1976 in Vantaa ) is a former Finnish ski jumper . He started for the ski club of the city of Lahti, the Lahden Hiihtoseura .

Career

The Finn started ski jumping at the age of seven. He made his debut in the World Cup on March 28, 1993 in Planica, Slovenia . Then it took until the 1998/1999 season for the Finn to reappear. This was also due to a serious training fall in Lahti in December 1995 , in which he suffered a broken collarbone and a tear in a lung.

This fall and serious injury threw Kiuru back into the Continental Cup from the 1996/1997 to 1998/1999 season. On February 7, 1999 in Harrachov, Czech Republic , he made his comeback in the World Cup with an eighth place. With this result he got his first World Cup points.

In the following years he was constantly used in the World Cup team. He achieved his first podium in the team competition in ski flying in Planica on March 17, 2001, his first podium in the individual, a third place, he took almost exactly two years later, on March 15, 2003, on his home hill in Lahti. On December 14, 2003 he achieved his first and so far only victory in an individual competition when he won the World Cup on the Hochfirstschanze in Titisee-Neustadt , which was canceled after the first round due to difficult conditions .

On February 23, 2003, Tami Kiuru was world champion at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2003 with the team from the large hill, a year later he won silver with the team at the Ski Flying World Championships in Planica and achieved the bronze medal in the individual after he in the third of four races, he was even in the lead.

Since the 2004/2005 season , the tall and naturally petite jumper has been one of the victims of adapting the ski length to the body mass index . Due to his light figure, he now has to jump with shorter skis than before and than other, heavier-built athletes of his size. Nevertheless, he achieved silver with the team at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2005 in Oberstdorf as well as at the Ski Flying World Championships on Kulm 2006. He succeeded in doing this at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin .

Kiuru also collected various individual medals at the internal Finnish championships, was once Finnish champion, twice runner-up and was bronze four times, including once during his junior years. There are also various team medals with the team from Lahden Hiihtoseura.

In March 2007 in Planica, Kiuru seriously injured his left knee in a fall after landing and had to undergo an operation because he had completely torn the anterior cruciate ligament and tore the posterior and both menisci and a collateral ligament. After starting jumping again in November 2007 after an eight-month break, it turned out that two more operations were necessary. He is currently still struggling with the consequences of the injuries. After the 2008/09 season, Kiuru ended his career as an active competitive athlete. He then studied photography in Jyväskylä and turned his hobby into a profession: primarily he deals with product photography and supplies u. a. Pictures of the women's ski jumping World Cup for the FIS .
