The Letalnica bratov Gorišek [ ˈɡɔriʃɛk ] ( German ski flying hill of the Gorišek brothers ), mostly just called Letalnica [ ˈleːtalnitsa ] for short , is the second largest ski flying hill in the world measured by the hill record and is located in Planica, Slovenia . So far 28 ski flying world records have been set on the hill . With a few exceptions, it has traditionally been the last stop in a ski jumping World Cup season since the 1990s .
history
The first ski jumping hill was built in Planica before 1930. In 1934 Stanko Bloudek opened the Bloudkova Velikanka -schanze (German Bloudeks large hill ), the first large hill in the world, which at that time was still considered a flying hill. The ski flying world record has been improved several times on this hill. However, after the ski jumps got bigger and bigger all over the world and large, modern ski flying hills were built, the decision was made in the 1960s to follow suit in Planica. Since it was not possible to enlarge the old ski jump, the brothers Lado and Janez Gorišek constructed the new flying hill not far from the old ski jump. This was opened on March 19, 1969 in front of 90,000 spectators. On the opening weekend, the ski flying world record was improved five times.
Since then, World Cup jumping and ski flying world championships have been held regularly on the hill . The world record has also been improved several times here. While various flying hills were initially involved in the development of the world record, it was always set up on Letalnica from 1986, when Matti Nykänen flew 191 meters, to 2011, when Johan Remen Evensen jumped 246.5 meters on Vikersundbakken . On March 17, 1994, Andreas Goldberger was the first person to jump over 200 meters in Planica, but could not stand the jump. The first official "two hundred" is therefore credited to Toni Nieminen , who jumped 203 meters on the same day.
In 2005 Bjørn Einar Romøren set a new hill record with 239 meters, which was also the ski flying world record until February 11, 2011. On the same day, the Finn Janne Ahonen managed another flight with 240 meters, but he could not stand the jump, which is why the jump was not classified as a world record.
Minor modifications are made to the hill on a regular basis in order to always meet current needs. In 2013 the ski jump was rebuilt so that jumps of 250 meters are possible, so that the world record could be brought back to Planica. In the coming years, jumps of up to 270 meters should be possible, which is, however, controversial. At the first World Cup on the converted hill on March 20, 2015, Peter Prevc set a new hill record with a jump of 248.5 meters. Ryoyu Kobayashi has held the hill record of 252 meters since March 24, 2019 .
The name of the ski jump
The hill was originally called Velikanka (German large hill or simply large ) and was renamed Letalnica (German flying hill ) for the 2004 Ski Flying World Championships .

Others
Every time a jumper jumped over 200 meters, the song "Planica" by the Avsenik group was played. Since the 2011/2012 season it has only been used for distances of over 215 meters, as 200-meter jumps are now very common.
In the 2016/17 season, the song was only played on flights over the 225-meter mark. For the 2018/19 season, the limit was 230 meters.
